About Larry
Original oil paintings by Larry and Judith Pumfrey

Painting for me is exciting and I'm thankful for all the pleasure it has given in my life, including visually sharing my impressions and excitement with others. I mostly paint outdoors or what is popularly known as "plein-air painting" because experiencing nature and capturing the changing scene on canvas is so rewarding

A painter of landscapes and portraits seriously since 1976, Larry is a painter in oil, acrylic, and watercolor with a  special interest is in coastal harbor scenes and people actively enjoying their environment. His challenge is to paint what he feels rather than what he knows, not the subject matter itself but the colorful patterns of light and shadow that  nature offers.

Larry is a sought after juror, workshop instructor and demonstrator. He studied with Boston School painters; David Curtis, Robert Douglas Hunter and Robert Cormier as well as at the Cape Cod School of Art, Montserrat School of Art and Decordova Musium and with nationally known plein-air masters: George Strickland, Matt Smith, Ron Rencher, Ned Muller, Joseph Mendez and Kevin Macpherson.

He has a keen interest in the evolution of painters who continue to inspire him; J. F. Carlson, Edgar Paine, Sergei Bongart, Nicolai Fechin and contemporary painters who were influenced by the French and  Russian impressionists

Larry shares his life and passion for art with his wife Judy. They enjoy the opportunities of a common interest and share painting, teaching and critiquing art together.. They particularly enjoy discussing art theory and books by artists that inspire them and promote ideas for seeing and feeling the visual qualities of an Image.
